Part 1. Setting the Platform

Level: High School, Senior

A “general play scrum” — that’s how Brendon Ratcliffe (Rats) views the maul. In this two-part series, Brendon starts by working with Napier Boys’ High School players on securing clean lineout possession as the foundation for an effective maul drive. He then breaks down the individual player roles and body positions, giving coaches a clear framework for building a strong, organised, and forward moving maul.

Part 2. The Drive

Level: High School, Senior

Time to bring the ‘engine room’ into the drive. Brendon set up the front of the line out ball in part 1 of the series now he in part 2 he looks to add the rest of the lineout into the drive. When executed correctly it is hard to stop.
